AI in the Classroom : Not for cheating but for learning

What is the Purpose of this idea ?

  As the technology is evolving, AI is also becoming a huge threat, or is it ?

The University of  Almeria has announced : "artificial intelligence are being introduced in our school not to replace anyone but to improve our productivity and of course to prepare students to their technology-led future. In the last decades, new educational technologies have been developed and approved by researchers and a few universities to support eucational lessons and also personal ones. As more digital and informatic skills are expected to be fundamental in many fields in the future, it is believed to be a responsability for schools to adapt and adopt those skills. So by learning and using AI, learning experiences can be improved and students can be more efficient while working and studying.

In the classroom, AI tools will be used in numerous ways like homeworks can be checked efficiently and feedbacks and additional exercises can be generated instantly, also concepts can be explained through interactive programs and the progress of each student can be monitored constantly and carefully. Learning material can be easily accessed only at any time and anywhere, letting the students plan their own schedule and develop their own learning process. As a result, lessons are expected to become not only more efficient but also more personalised for students.

However, universities are aware that some concerns have been raised, which is logical as it will be the first time. Students' data might be collected or leaked, which obviously is a considered as a fraud. Furthermore, AI has been criticised for being used to cheat and for other malicious intentions. In addition, some teaching jobs are believed to be threatened and replaced by robots or automotion. It is also feared that to rely too much on AI can reduce the human side and the critical thinking skills.

Those concerns can be addressed in several ways for instance :
  • Clear guidelines must be established to prevent misuse;
  • Students would be taught how to use AI responsibly;
  • Teachers will not be replaced but they be supported.
So indeed if AI is managed wisely, its risks can be reduced and its benefits can be optimised.
